The princes digged the well, the nobles of the people digged it, by the direction of the lawgiver, with their staves. And from the wilderness they went to Mattanah:
The princes dug the well; the nobles of the people hollowed it out with their scepters and with their staffs.” From the wilderness the Israelites went on to Mattanah,

15 And the bottom of the ravines, that extendeth toward the dwelling of Ar,—And adjoineth to the boundary of Moab,
16 And from thence, towards Beer,—the same, is the well whereof Yahweh said unto Moses, Gather together the people, that I may give them water.
17 Then, sang Israel this song,—Spring thou up, O well! Respond ye thereunto;
18 A well!—princes digged it, Nobles of the people, delved it, With a sceptre, With their staves. And, from the desert, to Mattanah;
19 and from Mattanah, to Nahaliel; and from Nahaliel, to Bamoth;
20 and, from Bamoth of the valley, which is in the field-country of Moab, to the top of Pisgah,—which overlooketh Jeshimon.
21 Then sent Israel messengers, unto Sihon king of the Amorites, saying:
