At this, David summoned the Gibeonites and spoke to them. (Now the Gibeonites were not Israelites, but a remnant of the Amorites. The Israelites had taken an oath concerning them, but in his zeal for Israel and Judah, Saul had sought to kill them.)

4 I Gabaoniti gli risposero: “Fra noi e Saul e la sua casa non è questione d’argento o d’oro; e non appartiene a noi il far morire alcuno in Israele”. Il re disse: “Quel che voi direte io lo farò per voi”.
5 E quelli risposero al re: “Poiché quell’uomo ci ha consunti e avea fatto il piano di sterminarci per farci sparire da tutto il territorio d’Israele,
