Stand Tall: How to Pray Against What Is Pulling You Down

Four times in one passage Paul says 'stand.' He never once says advance, and he never once says retreat.

Ephesians 6 is the most quoted passage on spiritual warfare and the most misread. Read the verbs: withstand, stand, stand, stand. The instruction is not to charge and not to flee. It is to hold ground that has already been won.

That reframes almost everything. You are not trying to obtain victory. You are refusing to be moved off it. Most of what comes at you is designed not to defeat you but to relocate you — to get you off ground you were standing on legitimately.

Pray from the position, not toward it. There is a difference between 'Lord, please make me accepted' and 'Father, I thank You that I am accepted in the Beloved, and I refuse this accusation.' Both are prayers. Only one is standing.

Name the specific thing. Vague warfare prayer is exhausting and produces nothing. 'I bind every spirit' covers everything and touches nothing. Name it: this fear, this habit, this relationship, this thought that arrives at 2 a.m. Specificity is not a lack of faith. It is how you know whether anything changed.

Put scripture in your mouth, not just your mind. Jesus answered the wilderness temptation three times with 'It is written' — spoken, not merely believed. There is something about the audible word that steadies a person, and every believer who has done it in a dark hour knows it.

Deal with the ground. 'The prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me,' Jesus said. Unconfessed sin and unforgiveness give the accusation something to stand on. Clearing that ground is not legalism; it removes the handle.

Stand with somebody. Every piece of the armour Paul lists is for the front of the body. The formation assumed is a line of people, not a lone hero. If you are fighting something alone, that is part of the strategy against you, and it is the part you can change today.

Stand on this

Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

Ephesians 6:13 · KJV

Pray

Father, I stand on ground that Christ has already won. I refuse to be relocated by accusation, fear, or pressure. Clear anything in me that gives the enemy a handle, and send me one person to stand with. In Jesus' name, Amen.
