Seven Signs Your Faith Is Quietly Degrading

Nobody wakes up far from God. They arrive there by a series of small, reasonable-sounding steps.

Faith rarely collapses. It erodes. And erosion is hard to notice from inside, because every individual step feels defensible. Here are seven markers that show up long before anything dramatic happens.

1. Prayer becomes reporting. You still pray, but you have stopped expecting anything. The words are accurate and the heart is absent. You are filing a status update rather than speaking to a Person.

2. You defend what you used to confess. There was a time you would have called a thing sin. Now you have a framework that explains it. Notice when your theology develops in exactly the direction your appetite was already heading.

3. Scripture becomes material. You read to teach, to post, to win an argument. You have stopped reading as someone who needs to be told something. The Bible has quietly become a resource instead of an authority.

4. Conviction feels like condemnation. Healthy conviction is specific and points to a door. Condemnation is vague and points at you. When every stirring of the Spirit starts feeling like an attack, something in the relationship has shifted.

5. You avoid a particular person. There is someone who knows you well and asks real questions. You have been busy lately. That avoidance is information.

6. Your private and public lives have drifted apart. Not into sin necessarily — into distance. The gap between the person people describe and the person you are alone with has widened, and you have stopped trying to close it.

7. You are not expecting God to do anything. This is the quietest and most serious. Faith that expects nothing is not humility. It is a settlement you made with disappointment.

None of these means you have lost your salvation. All of them mean the lamp needs trimming. The remedy is not a heroic reset — it is one honest conversation with God today, naming the specific sign you recognised, without softening it.

Stand on this

Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love. Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works.

Revelation 2:4–5 · KJV

Pray

Father, show me which of these is true of me and do not let me talk my way out of it. Restore what has eroded. Bring back the expectation I lost. In Jesus' name, Amen.
