You are being formed by something every day. The only question is whether you chose it.
Discipleship is not only what happens at church. It is the sum of every voice that shapes what you want. And most of the voices shaping you today were not selected by you — they were served to you by a system optimised for your attention, not your holiness.
The feed disciples by repetition, not argument. Nothing you scroll past tries to convince you of anything. It simply shows you, ten thousand times, what a normal life looks like, what is desirable, what is embarrassing, and who is winning. Repetition is more persuasive than argument, and it bypasses the part of you that evaluates claims.
Comparison is the delivery mechanism. Almost every lure works by first making you feel a lack you did not previously have. Discontent is manufactured, then a solution is sold. You did not want it this morning. You want it now. Trace that backwards.
Outrage is a counterfeit of righteousness. It feels like caring. It produces nothing, costs nothing, changes nothing, and leaves you convinced you have participated in something. Scripture's word for real concern always involves action toward a specific person.
Ambition wearing the language of calling. This one gets past Christians because it speaks the dialect. 'Influence.' 'Platform.' 'Stewarding my gift.' Some of it is real. Some is ordinary ambition that learned the vocabulary. The test is simple: if the same work had no audience, would you still want it?
Comfort as a governing value. The most effective lure in a prosperous society is not vice. It is ease — the slow conviction that a life without friction is a life that is going well. Nothing in scripture supports it, and nothing in your experience does either, but it is very hard to feel.
The remedy is not to withdraw from the world. It is to choose your formation deliberately: a fixed daily intake of scripture that is not negotiable, at least one person with permission to ask you hard questions, and a periodic honest audit of what you actually consume versus what you believe you consume.
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
Romans 12:2 · KJV
Father, show me what has been discipling me without my consent. Give me the courage to cut off what is forming me wrongly, and the discipline to replace it rather than simply remove it. Renew my mind. In Jesus' name, Amen.
