Prayer 17 of 35 · Psalm 87:1–7

To Receive God's Favour

Seven verses about a city, and one line that turns them personal: 'the LORD shall count, when he writeth up the people, that this man was born there.' Favour here is not a mood God is in. It is a register — a record of belonging. Rahab, Babylon, Philistia and Ethiopia all appear: the outsider is written in by name.

The prayer

LORD, Your foundation is in the holy mountain, and glorious things are spoken of Your city. I thank You that when You write up the people, my name is among those born in Zion — not by my birth, my nation, or my merit, but by the blood of Jesus. Let that belonging show. Give me favour before those who decide, those who hire, those who lend, and those who open doors. Let people be kind to me for no reason they can name. And let the favour You give me be used for someone other than myself. In the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
