Prayer 5 of 35 · Psalm 12:1–8

To Dispel Fear and Overcome Worry

This psalm opens in something like despair and is honest about it. Then verse 6 turns: 'The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.' Anxiety feeds on unreliable words. Here is one category that has been through the furnace and lost nothing.

The prayer

Help, LORD, for I am surrounded by words that do not hold — vain words, flattering words, words spoken to frighten me. Set a guard over what I receive. Your words are pure words, silver tried seven times in the furnace, and they have never once failed. Arise, O LORD, for the sighing of the needy; set me in the safety You have promised. Take from me the spirit of fear which You did not give, and let Your perfect love cast it out. Quiet my body, still my mind, and let me sleep tonight like a child who is not in charge of the outcome. In Jesus' name. Amen.
