Prayer 9 of 35 · Psalm 91:1–16 · Psalm 127:3–5

Protection for Children

Psalm 91's promises are startlingly physical — the snare of the fowler, the terror by night, angels charged to bear you up. It is the psalm for a parent whose child is outside their sight, which is every parent, every day. Psalm 127 gives the reason it matters: children are God's heritage, entrusted to you, not yours to carry alone.

The prayer

Father, my children are Your heritage, not merely mine. I place them under the shadow of the Almighty, where the pestilence that walks in darkness cannot find them and the arrow that flies by day cannot reach them. Give Your angels charge over them in every place I cannot go — the road, the school, the screen, the friendship I know nothing about. Guard their bodies from harm and their minds from every corrupting thing. Draw them early, and let them serve You before the world has had a chance to argue. Let them be arrows in the hand of a mighty man, and let their aim be true. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
