Prayer 14 of 35 · Psalm 24:1–10

Protection Entering a New Year

The question of the psalm is not 'will next year be good?' but 'Who shall ascend into the hill of the LORD?' — and the answer is clean hands and a pure heart. You do not enter a new year by making resolutions. You enter it by settling what you are carrying in.

The prayer

The earth is Yours and the fullness of it, and this year that I am entering is Yours before it is mine. Give me clean hands and a pure heart. I lay down at this threshold every offence I am still holding, every habit that dishonours You, and every regret I have been dragging behind me. Lift up your heads, O ye gates — let the King of glory come into this year ahead of me. Order my steps, guard my household, establish the work of my hands, and let what You begin in me this year be finished. In the name of Jesus Christ, the King of glory. Amen.
