Prayer 24 of 35 · Psalm 4:1–8 (morning) · Psalm 25:1–7 (evening)

Morning and Evening Prayer

The pairing is deliberate. Psalm 4 is a night psalm used as a morning anchor — 'thou hast enlarged me when I was in distress' — reminding you at the start of today what God did at the end of yesterday. Psalm 25 closes the day with the most important request anyone can make before sleep.

The prayer

MORNING — Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness. You have enlarged me when I was in distress; have mercy on me and hear my prayer again today. Put gladness in my heart. Order this day: my words, my work, my meetings, my temper, and my thoughts. Let me do nothing today I will need to repent of tonight. Let me be a blessing to at least one person before the sun goes down. ⁂ EVENING — Unto You, O LORD, do I lift up my soul. Show me Your ways; teach me Your paths. Remember not the sins of my youth — according to Your mercy remember me. I hand back everything from this day I could not finish and everything I handled badly. I will both lay me down in peace and sleep, for You only make me dwell in safety. In Jesus' name. Amen.
