Prayer 15 of 35 · Psalm 17:1–15
David asks God to try him in the night and prove there is nothing false in him — then asks to be kept 'as the apple of the eye,' the most reflexively defended part of the body. The psalm names its enemies precisely: those who 'compass us in our steps.' Envy always watches closely.
Hear the right, O LORD; attend unto my cry. You have proved my heart and visited me in the night — if there is anything false in me, purge it. Keep me as the apple of Your eye; hide me under the shadow of Your wings from the wicked that oppress me and from those who compass me about. Deliver me from every eye that watches my progress with envy, and from every hand that would pull down what You are building. I refuse to shrink to make anyone comfortable, and I refuse to boast to make anyone jealous. Let me walk in the favour You gave me without fear. In Jesus' name. Amen.
