Grief

Someone is gone and the world kept moving

The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.

Psalm 34:18 · King James Version

Father, they are gone and I do not know how to be in a world that does not have them in it.

The prayer points

1. Psalm 34:18

The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart.

Psalm 34:18

Be near. Not fix it, not explain it — near.

2. John 11:35

Jesus wept.

John 11:35

You wept at a grave You were about to empty. So my crying is not a failure of faith. Let me cry without apologising.

3. Revelation 21:4

And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death.

Revelation 21:4

Hold the end of the story in front of me. There is a day with no more death in it.

4. 2 Corinthians 1:3-4

The Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; who comforteth us in all our tribulation.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4

Comfort me the way only You can, and one day let me comfort someone else with it.

5. Psalm 23:4

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me.

Psalm 23:4

Through. Not stuck in. Walk me through this valley at whatever pace I can manage.

6. 1 Thessalonians 4:13

That ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.

1 Thessalonians 4:13

Let me grieve as one who has hope — not as one who has to pretend it does not hurt.

Declarations

Say these out loud. Not to convince God — to remind yourself what is true when your feelings are arguing.

Lord, thank You for them. Thank You for every year I had. I would not give one of them back to avoid this.

Pray, and also act. Pray, and also let people in. Eat something. Say the name out loud. Grief has no schedule and anyone who gives you one is wrong. If months pass and you cannot function, a grief counsellor is a gift, not a failure.
