Prayer points

Fear and anxiety at night

The three a.m. dread that will not lift

For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

2 Timothy 1:7 · King James Version

Father, it is dark and my mind will not stop. I am not going to pretend to be strong. I am just going to stay here with You until it lifts.

The prayer points

1. 2 Timothy 1:7

God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

2 Timothy 1:7

This fear did not come from You. I refuse it in the name of Jesus and I ask for a sound mind in its place.

2. Psalm 91:5

Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night.

Psalm 91:5

Cover the night. Every terror that comes in the dark, let it find no entrance here.

3. Isaiah 41:10

Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee.

Isaiah 41:10

Say it to me again. I am with thee. I need it more than I need an explanation.

4. Philippians 4:6

Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer... let your requests be made known unto God.

Philippians 4:6

I name the thing I am afraid of out loud instead of circling it silently for another hour.

5. Psalm 4:8

I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.

Psalm 4:8

Let me sleep. Not tomorrow — tonight.

6. 1 Peter 5:7

Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

1 Peter 5:7

I am putting it down. If I pick it up again in an hour, I will put it down again.

Declarations

Say these out loud. Not to convince God — to remind yourself what is true when your feelings are arguing.

Father, be here until morning.

Pray, and also act. Pray, and also be kind to your body. Put the phone down, get out of bed for ten minutes, drink water, breathe slowly. If the dread is most days rather than some nights, tell your doctor — that is wisdom, not weak faith.
