The Altar
The Daniel fast
Twenty-one days, no pleasant food
In those days I Daniel was mourning three full weeks. I ate no pleasant bread, neither came flesh nor wine in my mouth.
Daniel 10:2-3 · King James Version
Why this one
Daniel mourned three full weeks while he sought understanding. This is the fast for a long matter — a family situation, a calling, a breakthrough that has not come.
The shape of it
Plain food only for twenty-one days — vegetables, grains, fruit, water. No meat, no rich food, no sweets, no alcohol. Many also fast entertainment.
What to expect
Week one is physical. Week two is emotional. Week three is where most people say something shifts. The delay in Daniel 10 was twenty-one days — that is not a coincidence in the text.
Breaking it
Reintroduce rich food slowly over three or four days.
Day by day
- Days 1–7 — Clear the ground. Confession, forgiveness, restitution where it is owed.
- Days 8–14 — Intercession. Pray for others more than for yourself.
- Days 15–21 — Stand and ask. Bring the matter, and keep bringing it.
Before you begin. Fasting is a spiritual discipline, not a medical one, and it is not for everybody. Do not fast from food without speaking to a doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, diabetic, underweight, taking medication that must be taken with food, recovering from illness or surgery, under eighteen, or if you have any history of an eating disorder. There is no shame in fasting from something other than food — media, spending, sleep for a night, a habit. God is not measuring your stomach.
