Be Still Is a Command, Not a Mood

Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.

Psalm 46:10 · KJV

This verse gets embroidered onto cushions, which has almost entirely hidden what it is. It is not a suggestion to relax. In the psalm it arrives after the earth is removed, the mountains are carried into the sea, the waters roar and the kingdoms are moved. It is an order given in a war.

The Hebrew carries the sense of 'let go' — drop your hands, cease striving. It is spoken to people who are trying to hold something together that only God can hold.

And stillness has a purpose attached: that you may know. Some things about God cannot be learned at speed. There is knowledge only available to a person who has stopped managing the outcome.

Today's step

Take ten minutes today with no input — no phone, no music, no podcast. Not to feel better. To obey a command.

Pray

God, I am striving over something that was never mine to hold. I let go of it now. Be exalted in this situation whether or not it resolves the way I planned. Teach me what I can only learn standing still. In Jesus' name, Amen.
