What does the Bible say about divorce?

God's intention is permanence, and Jesus says so directly. He names marital unfaithfulness as a ground, and Paul addresses desertion by an unbelieving spouse as another. Christians who take the Bible equally seriously differ on remarriage after divorce, and on how far abuse and abandonment fall under these provisions — most hold that a spouse is not bound to remain in danger. If you are in that situation, get safe, then take real counsel from people who know your case rather than a paragraph in an app.

Matthew 19:6

And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.

Matthew 19:9

But if the unbelieving depart, let him depart. A brother or a sister is not under bondage in such cases: but God hath called us to peace.
