He is not presented as a good teacher who was later promoted. He forgave sins that were not committed against Him, accepted worship, claimed to have existed before Abraham using the divine name, and was crucified on the charge of blasphemy for it. Thomas called Him my Lord and my God and was commended rather than corrected. The options have always been narrower than people assume: either those claims were false, or they were true.
